📋 Practice Plan
Today's Focus: Coachability — Can they receive feedback, make adjustments, and show improvement?
Roster: 15 players (yesterday's 11 + Gus Hebert, Jayden Kuo, Michael Albornoz, Peter Dai)
Staff Deployment:
- Hebert or Graefe (coaches): One goes on course (Plan A) or runs stations (Plan B); the other handles range work and individual feedback
- Miranda (Manager): Setup and facilitate putting/short game stations, track coachability notes
PLAN A (If Course is Available)
On-Course Play (90 min) — Observing players under game conditions:
- Foursome 1: Miles Park (lead), Jayden Li, Ai, Lloyd
- Rationale: Jayden Li (1.26), Ai (1.22), Lloyd (1.07) are bubble/fringe players. Miles leads but is also being evaluated.
- Foursome 2: Gabriel Gui (lead), Hubert Choi, Jaeho, Meihan
- Rationale: Hubert (1.22, grip issues), Jaeho (1.17), Meihan (1.06) are bubble/fringe players. Gabriel leads but is also being evaluated.
- Coach Assignment: Either Hebert OR Graefe goes on the course (rides along or walks with both groups)
Practice Area Rotations (30 min per station) — 7 remaining players:
- Group: Ben, Harry, Jacky, Gus, Peter Dai, Michael, Jayden Kuo
Station 1: Short Game (Miranda - setup and facilitate)
- Simple drill: Chip to 10 yards, 10 balls each; then, move back to 20.
- Focus: Clean contact, see who improves over reps
- Track coachability: Who asks questions? Who helps others?
Station 2: Putting (Miranda - setup and facilitate)
- Self-directed pressure putting: 5 from 4', then 5 from 6', then 5 from 8'
- Players track their own scores
- Track: Who holds themselves accountable?
Station 3: Range (Hebert or Graefe - whoever stays at practice)
- Universal Compression Drill (First 20 min, all players)
- If on mats: "Towel Behind the Ball"
- Setup: Place towel 2-3 inches behind ball, choke down on 7- or 8-iron; start with short swings
- Goal: Hit ball cleanly without touching towel
- If on grass: "Tee-In-Front"
- Setup: Push tee into ground 2-3 inches in front of ball, choke down on 7- or 8-iron; start with short swings
- Goal: Hit ball first, then take divot that clips the tee out of the ground
- Players do 3 sets of 5 swings, track successful compressions
- Individual work (Last 10 min): Give specific feedback to unknown quantities (Gus, Peter Dai, Michael, Jayden Kuo)
Closing (once everyone returns from course): 4' putt circle — everyone makes it before leaving
PLAN B (If No Course Access)
Three-Station Rotation (25 min each, all 15 players rotate):
- Group 1: Miles, Gabriel, Jayden Li, Hubert, Ai (5 players)
- Group 2: Ben, Jaeho, Lloyd, Meihan, Harry (5 players)
- Group 3: Gus, Peter Dai, Michael, Jayden Kuo, Jacky (5 players)
Station 1: Short Game (Hebert or Graefe)
- Primary focus: (Jayden Li, Hubert, Ai, Jaeho)
- Can they implement deceleration fixes? (Jayden Li, Meihan)
- Can they improve contact quality? (Harry, Jacky—both scored 2 in combine)
- Can Hubert make a grip change?
- Simple drill: Chip to 10 yards, 10 balls each, track improvement; then move back to 20.
- Watch for coachability: Can they implement one change over 10 chips?
- Key observation: Do some players separate themselves from the pack here by showing coachability and improvement?
Station 2: Putting (Miranda)
- Pressure putting progression: 5 from 4', then 5 from 6', then 5 from 8'
- Track who responds well to pressure, who folds
- Note: Who helps others? Who asks questions? Who stays engaged when waiting?
- Player observation: Middle-tier under pressure vs. top tier vs. bottom tier
Station 3: Range (Hebert or Graefe)
- Universal Compression Drill (First 15 min, all players)
- If on mats: "Towel Behind the Ball"
- Setup: Place towel 2-3 inches behind ball, choke down on 7- or 8-iron; start with short swings
- Goal: Hit ball cleanly without touching towel
- The towel shows your low point. Hit the towel = fat shot. Miss the towel (and hit the mat) = compression.
- If on grass: "Tee-In-Front"
- Setup: Push tee into ground 2-3 inches in front of ball, choke down on 7- or 8-iron; start with short swings
- Goal: Hit ball first, then take divot that clips the tee out of the ground
- Talking points: "Ball first, ground second. If you leave the tee in the ground, you scooped it. If you knock the tee out, you compressed it."
- Progression: 5 swings, count successful compressions, try to improve
- Key for coachability: Who improves their count? Who asks clarifying questions?
- After compression drill (Last 20 min): Individual work based on combine results
- Hook/draw players (Gabriel, Hubert, Jayden Li, Ai, Jacky): Path work—coming from inside. Feel like swinging left.
- Contact quality focus (Harry, Meihan, Lloyd, Jaeho): More compression drills, ad nauseam
- Top tier (Miles, Ben): Refinement work, video analysis available
- Unknown quantities (Gus, Peter Dai, Michael, Jayden Kuo): Initial assessment, establish baseline
Closing: 4' putt circle — everyone makes it before leaving
Coachability Markers to Observe:
- Do they ask clarifying questions?
- Can they repeat back what you told them?
- Do they show measurable change over 5-10 reps?
- How do they respond to struggle?
- Do they help teammates?
💭 Reflection
Today's coachability focus paid off. The on-course play revealed things the combine couldn't—Jayden Li rose to the occasion under game conditions, while Hubert struggled despite having comparable combine numbers. Jaeho's willingness to grind through drills for 20 minutes straight is exactly what I'm looking for.
The roster is clarifying: Miles, Jayden Li, Ben, and Gus are rising. Hubert, Harry, Meihan, and Jacky are falling. Gabriel is solid but not elite. The middle tier (Jaeho, Lloyd, Ai, Peter Dai) still needs more evaluation, but Jaeho's coachability is moving him up.
Gus fixing his shanks immediately after one cue ("hit it on the toe") shows the kind of quick adjustment ability that matters in matches. Jayden Kuo's lack of commitment is concerning—he has the skill but not the fire.
