Today’s focus
🎯 Focus: The 47-Stroke Delta (Bogey Avoidance)
The Problem: Over the last two matches, the team leaked 47 strokes to doubles, triples, and worse.
The Goal: Turn every "big number" into a "boring bogey." Only one player has played clean of doubles/triples recently.
📋 Practice Plans
Plan A: On-Course Simulation (Preferred)
The Under-the-Tree Challenge
- Setup: Every player starts with a ball placed under a tree (compromised position).
- Objective: Get down in 4 strokes or fewer from under the tree.
- Competition: Players compete against their own group.
- Focus: No hero shots. Punch out, wedge close, 2-putt for bogey. Reward the discipline of the "safe" play.
Plan B: Station Rotations (Competitive)
Three-Station Rotation: Range, Short Game, Putting
The focus is still recovering from a poorly placed tee shot. Therefore, we are HYPER-FOCUSED on getting up and down.
- Station 1: Range (The Recovery Punch)
- Players must practice flighting balls under a specific "bar" (tree limb simulation).
- Focus on 50% swings with long irons/hybrids.
- Station 2: Short Game (The Scramble)
- Focus on the 30-40 yard pitch that secures a look at bogey/par after a recovery.
- We need to get up and down in three shots or fewer from these positions.
- BUNKERS: Let's set some understanding of bunker play.
- FAIL = Your ball is still in the bunker after your shot.
- C = Ball out of the bunker.
- B = Ball on the green.
- A = Ball within 10' of the hole.
- Station 3: Putting (The Bogey Saver)
- 3-6-9 foot drill.
- Lag putting. Practice putts from 20 feet and beyond. The most important thing is distance control.
- Teaching Station: I will camp at the Short Game station to teach the high-percentage wedge play and reward disciplined landing zone choices.
💭 Reflection
- I gave the first poker chip to Matthew Hao '27 because he was the only one with a clean scorecard this week: no big numbers!
- We talked a lot in practice about big numbers. Let's have less of those. I told students that a clean scorecard for us is nothing higher than bogey.
- Forgot to talk about bunkers.
